This go-to hat gives the knitter an ‘Aha!’ moment about Garter Stitch and is an interesting method of hat construction.

Depending on whether you are knitting flat or in the round, you will knit every row or alternate knit and purl rounds. The hat is really fun to make/wear and knits up fast, with its short row diagonals and interesting color changes. It is a perfect, cozy companion for a run to the store or a cup of joe with a friend.

Construction begins with the knitting the hat body flat in garter stitch strip, using short rows to create diagonal ridges. Body band is joined and then crown stitches are picked up along one edge and crown is knitted in the round, using decreases to shape the top. 2 buttons are sewn on (decorative, not functional) and the brim edge is finished with crocheted slip stitches.

Skill Level: Easy. Optional: 28 inches of 3M reflective thread to weave in near crown for night-time visibility.
