September 2020 Pattern has been updated with corrections, improvements to layout, and the option of printing chart-only or written-only instructions for the slipped stitch motifs.

Coggalbeg Cowl is inspired by the geometric surface decoration on gold lunulae in the collection of the National Museum of Ireland.

This pattern is cast on along its length; it is knit back & forth using a combination of mosaic knitting and slipped stitch patterns in garter stitch, so only one colour is worked at a time. The cowl is finished with applied button bands. The cowl can be worn with buttons closed as a long cowl or wrapped twice around the neck, or unbuttoned as a scarf.

The pattern includes written & charted instructions.

Size (at gauge given) 131 x 32 cm / 51. 5 x 12. 5 inches.

Yarn
4 ply or fingering weight yarn in two colours: 400m / 440 yards of each.
I recommend complementary colours, with some contrast. Highly variegated colours may obscure the stitch patterns.
The sample was knit using Hedgehog Fibres Sock Yarn Col (350 m/100g), one skein each of colours Crystal (Colour A ) & Graphite (Colour B); I used all of colour A in this sample.
Alternatively any 2 skeins of any sock/fingering weight yarn in complementary colours; 400m / 440 yards per 100g skein.

Gauge
27 sts & 60 rows per 10 cm / 4 inches in Dotted Pattern and Blended Stripes Pattern.
Differences in gauge will affect yarn usage and finished size.

Needles
3mm circular or size needed to achieve gauge, approx 80cm / 32” long.

Additional Materials
Darning needle for weaving in ends. Stitch markers.
Six 8mm / .5 inch buttons.
Sewing needle & thread.
For blocking: pins, towel, flat surface such as towel or foam mats etc. Optional: 12 mm / .5 inch wide grosgrain ribbon or twill tape for reinforcing buttonbands, approx 70 cm / 28 inches long.

Notes for printing.
My hope is to enable knitters, if working from printed copies, to print only what you need. The individual pattern purchase includes three separate files. Please use the one that suits you best:

  1. All the information, includes chart and written instructions for the motifs.
  2. Chart only instructions for the motifs.
  3. Written only instructions for the motifs.
