About this pattern:
Moebius strips are a nearly life-long obsession. At age 3, I first saw a moebius strip (a loop with a single 180-degree twist in it) being made on a public television station program about math. The topic for the day was topology – a branch of mathematics that studies shapes and topological spaces. I was fascinated with the transformation from an object with two surfaces and two edges to an object with only one of each – that and I had the thought that doughnuts and coffee cups having the same topology was the key to the secret of the universe. Yeah, I was that kid.

Contortion began as a search for a center-to-edge seamless moebius that had a beginning that was as stretchy and flexible as the rest of the fabric. This cowl begins with a row of foundation double crochet that is joined with a single twist to create a moebius, and then worked from the center ridge out to the single edge.

Skills required:
You must be able to: chain, double crochet, foundation double crochet, and slip stitch. While the construction is unusual, the actual crochet is simple.

Materials:
Yarn: Yarn Carnival High Wire (Fingering Weight, 100% Superwash Merino, 490 yds/100g) in 2 colors. The yarns ideally should be semi-solids, but the main color could have small flecks of a color as well.

You will need 400 yds of Color A and 100 yds of Color B. Or you may may a single color version with 490 yards of one color.

Colors used in this pattern:
Color A: Big Bad Wolf (gray)
Color B: Amaranthine (purple)

Hook: US sizes H (5.00mm)

Notions: 1 locking stitch marker; tapestry needle for weaving in.

Gauge:
15 sts/10 rows=4” in double crochet.

Size:
13” deep and 32” circumference measured across twist, not the outside edge.
