While knitting a circle from the radius around with short rows (a common way to form a beret) I accidentally knit too many rows, so my work overlapped itself at the starting point.  About to unravel my mistake, I held the swatch by a corner and - eureka!  Knitting a narrow strip of short row wedges in the same direction, I correctly surmised, would create a spiral as curly as rotelli pasta.  -- description from Loop-d-Loop, pg. 21 (pattern on pg. 40)
