In the old days, mainly in The Netherlands and Belgium, a long record sampler such as this was used to practice knitting or embroidery techniques with a view to showing off your prowess as a needleworker. Another name for this sort of sampler was a “Souvenir de ma Jeunesse“.

What can you do with a crochet sampler?
I’m crocheting this sampler to try out and learn new stitches – mostly stitches that create a denser fabric. This sampler will also show me how a particular stitch “behaves” in relation to other stitches, whether it creates a broader or a narrower fabric.
You could also make squares and sew them together as a blanket.

Which materials can you use?
Basically, you could use whatever you like, including scraps. Choose which ever yarn feels comfortable, so you can enjoy every stitch.
For my crochet sampler I used Beijer - Cotton eight, 100 % cotton, color beige (370) en crochet hook 3mm.

The names of the stitches mentioned in this Crochet Sampler, are the names we use in Dutch. The English translation of these names are literal translations, which you will, quite likely, not find anywhere else. If you do, they may refer to other stitches, so bear this in mind when you make this sampler.
