“A man walks down the street in that hat, people know he’s not afraid of anything.”

Worked with double-strand, bottom-up, in the round. Earflaps are worked flat, downward, from picked up sts. Finished with a pompom made of all 3 yarns.

This hat is intended to be similar to one worn by Jayne Cobb (also known as the Hero of Canton), in the TV series, “Firefly.” True to the original, it is designed to look a little rough – curled earflap edges, too-bright colours, and a few strands of yarn hanging out.

Pattern is written for Women’s size, with any changes for Men’s size shown in (brackets).

Materials:

  • Herrschners Varsity yarn, or another Aran/Bulky weight yarn that gets you the right gauge: (85 – 95 yards Orange, 75 – 85 yards Yellow, and 75 – 85 yards Red)
  • Size US 10.75 (7.00mm) needles, either circular (Magic Loop) or DPN’s
  • 1 marker for end of round

Stitches & Techniques:
K (knit), P (purl), K2tog (knit 2 sts together), ssk (slip-slip-knit), K3tog (knit 3 sts together), and pu&K (pick up & knit)

You will also need to know how to make a 2.5” (6.5cm) pompom, by any method.
