I have written a 19 page step-by-step photo-tutorial to explain how to achieve a very neat, professional looking, cut and sew neckline on a machine knitted garment. Any yarn can be used, and only a small amount is required. A sample neckline shape is provided for your use.
“Being able to make a cut and sew neckline is a very handy skill to have, as an alternative to a neckline shaped on the knitting machine. Each technique has its own place, with advantages and disadvantages to both ways of working.
A neckline shaped on the machine uses the least amount of yarn, and is therefore most suited to using when there is a limited amount of yarn available, or if that yarn is expensive. On the other hand, it can take quite a long time to do, with tricky or challenging techniques when using various patterning abilities such as fair isle, lace, tuck or (dare I say it) double-bed work.“

There is now a V neck version of this method, here -
