The 2013 National World War II Museum’s Knit Your Bit Pattern is a textured waffle stitch with 1x1 ribbed edging. The idea for pattern was born from an attempt to have fabric reminiscent of 1940s men’s sweaters. Although not truly reversible, this pattern
produces a pleasing effect on both right and wrong sides of the fabric.

  1. All even rows (WS – wrong side) knit the knits and purl the purls.
  2. Slip first stitch of every row (as if to purl) unless noted otherwise. This will maintain neat, non-tight edging.
  3. Beginning and ending ribbing completed with size 9 needles; waffle stitch with ribbed edge on size 7 needles.
  4. Scarf width can be adjusted by casting on multiples of 3 + 18 stitches. Waffle stitch pattern repeats are multiples of 3+2 stitches PLUS 8 stitches of ribbing for left, right edge.
  5. Length can be adjusted to taste by adding and/or subtracting pattern repeats.
  6. Tubular Cast on and Bind off may also be completed for nicely finished edge. Tutorials can be found at the following links:
