This shawl was originally designed for Woolen Rabbit 2014 Yarn Club.

Like most little girls, I was transfixed by fairy tales. Princesses, ball gowns and true love…perhaps there was a castle in my future!

As I grew to adulthood though, I came into the realization that my destiny was my own. No one would come to rescue me, and I no longer even wanted that to happen. And as I learned to embrace and glory in that fact, I grew painfully aware that the princess of fairy tales was never truly captain of her own fate.

Then came Maleficent, the story of Sleeping Beauty from the “wicked” fairy’s viewpoint. It is a movie that celebrates loyalty, strength, the power of true love, and the ability to change your own fate. Maleficent touched me in a way no other fairy story has.

This shawl, with its midnight color and delicate featherlike lace, is an homage to all that is at once dark and light: to change, depth, and heart. And to flight, both literal and figurative.
