This shrug is named for the character Davina in the book Grace in Thine Eyes, by Liz Curtis Higgs. Davina wears a brocade bolero jacket in the book, and also has an important encounter with yarrow blossoms. Accordingly, this bolero shrug has a high collar that you can wear “popped” so it stands up and yarrow blossoms sprinkled on the back.

This pattern is very versatile. You can use any yarn and any needle, depending on what degree of openness you want in the meshwork and what weight you want it to be. I used Caron Simply Soft, an acrylic worsted weight yarn, and a size J hook, so it would be washable and work up quickly, but you could easily use a fingering weight yarn and a smaller hook to make this more summery, or a chunky weight to make it warmer. Simply take your measurements where indicated in the pattern and hook the appropriate number of stitches. You could also play with color: I made it monochromatic, but it would be adorable with the single crochet trims and flowers in a contrasting color, or for a young girl, make it in white or light pink and the flowers on the back in a rainbow of colors. Attach a hood, or buttons on the front, make the sleeves longer or shorter, or make it a bolero instead of full length. The options are endless.

This pattern has not been tested, except for the original I made while writing the pattern. If you find any errors while you are making it, please let me know so that I can fix them in the pattern. If you are interested in “officially” testing it, also please let me know. I appreciate your help!
