Het is 18 januari 1963. Op de dag dat het 18 graden vriest en er een noordoosterstorm opsteekt, staan duizenden schaatsers aan de start van de zwaarste Elfstedentocht ooit. Alle kouderecords zijn gebroken en het is onverantwoord de tocht door te laten gaan. Toch wordt het startsein gegeven…

Tijdens de 200 kilometer lange tocht over het slechte ijs worden de schaatsers overvallen door ondraaglijke kou en zware sneeuwstormen. Door sneeuwblindheid en bevroren oogleden raken honderden mensen gewond bij de vele valpartijen of doordat ze met hun hoofd tegen een brug schaatsen.

Van de 10.000 deelnemers die ’s ochtends bij de start zijn vertrokken, halen er slechts 126 de eindstreep. De winnaar is Reinier Paping, gevolgd door Jan Uitham en Jeen van den Berg. Eén ding hadden deze helden gemeen. Eén ding hielp hen de tocht der tochten en de barre kou te bedwingen…
