Deeds Not Words was the battle cry for suffragists and is the theme for this year’s Women’s History Month MKAL. You may be familiar with the sayings “Pretty is as Pretty does.” and “Actions speak louder than words.” These are just a few that represent the journey. This truth was (and in some cases still is) the battle cry for the courageous suffragists who struggled for the rights of women to be treated as equals in every aspect of life.

While this list celebrates the contributions women have made to history, in the interest of inclusion, I would like to point out that these contributions involved men as well. This design is created with unity in mind, so gentlemen knitters please consider yourselves included in this endeavor!

Each stitch pattern was selected based on the symbols used by suffragettes during their struggle.

When researching this topic in preparation for the MKAL, I very quickly found myself overhwelmed by the number of strong, courageous, and deserving women around the world. They have made it possible for many of us to have the rights and freedoms we enjoy today. Selecting just 5 to highlight in each clue was an impossible decision. Instead, this year each clue with begin with a quote by one of these heroic women, followed by a link to a website article where you can learn more about how this movement changed history.

Thank you for participating in this year’s MKAL honoring Women’s History Month.
