Denys Martin
Denys Martin
This two-tone colourwork design is named for Denys Martin, who served in the Arctic Convoys crossing from Scotland, around Norway and the Barents Sea, to bring vital supplies to wartime Russia. Martin lost his life in the sinking of HMS Mahratta on February 25th, 1944
Needles and notions
Gauge-size and below gauge-size circular needles of appropriate lengths for working body and neckline
Gauge-size and below gauge-size needle(s) of your preferred type for working small circumferences for sleeves
(I recommend using a needle two sizes down for the below gauge-size needle. That is, if you achieve gauge for the colourwork on a 7mm needle, use a 6mm needle for the rib and cuffs.)
Stitch markers
Waste yarn for holding stitches
Tapestry needle
Sewing needle and thread for securing steek edges
(Optional) ribbon facing for covering steek
Gauge
14 sts and 18 rows to 10 cm / 4in over stranded colourwork and stockinette worked in the round and back and forth with yarn held double
Use 7mm needle as a starting point for swatching.
Sizes
Body circumference, with overlapped front bands: 135.5 (167.5, 199) cm / 53¼ (66, 78½) in
Select the size above your own body measurements. This is an intentionally oversized cocooning garment.
Pattern notes
This boxy, cocoon-style cardigan is knitted in two shades. Stitches are cast on and a deep ribbed hem is worked in 2x2 rib, with a steek inserted at front-centre to enable knitting in the round. The body is worked from a colourwork chart, with two further steeks inserted for the armscyes. After the garment reaches the desired length, the steek stitches are bound off and the shoulders joined with a two-tone graft in which the pattern is centred and mirrored across each “seam.” After the steeks are reinforced and cut open, two sleeves are picked up and worked in a single shade from the top down. A ribbed edging - worked all around the fronts and back neck - completes the cardigan. Note that after the cast on, steek stitches are not included in running stitch counts and that charts are read from right to left throughout.
