The latest designer scarves include complex tweeds, very large stitches and hand knit-looking details. Though the yarns are often very bulky, they wrap and drape softly due to the loose knitting. Here is a version of the keyhole scarf with these features.

YARN, GAUGE AND MACHINE:
The bulky version of this scarf is the most like the designer look and the easiest to make but it can really be made on any machine with any yarn. The trick is to adjust the stitch size to be loose. Because of this, weights will be needed. Composite yarns do a wonderful job of creating this look so get out the odds and ends. The sample was made using 3 yarns throughout: 1 strand of a bamboo yarn, 1 strand of a thin cotton with long color changes and 1 strand of Tamm Diamante. The cotton and bamboo are both easily breakable but the Diamante gave them extra strength. All are fine yarns but the composite is a bulky. I used stitch size 7 on the LK100 to create a loose stockinette. The Diamante was 2 end cones in different colors. I changed half way through. The change blended in with the color changes in the cotton and came out lovely. Naturally your odds and ends will be unique but be brave and combine them. Even standard gauge machines can handle multistranded yarns as long as they are very fine.
