This Destination Unknown Afghan is like having two afghans in one using my double mosaic technique! The front of the afghan has a mesmerizing illusion of a hidden door, while the back has a repeating Hitomezashi stitch pattern!

If weaving in the ends, or hiding them in an envelope border, is your least favorite part of a mosaic project, you’ll love making this afghan! It starts two rows at a time with a two-color chain for the fringe, the rows are worked separately, then joined together again to complete the two-color chain fringe at the end of the two rows. This “two-colour chain DS” is created by, and used with permission of, Assia Brill. You can learn this two-colour chain DS on Assia Brill’s YouTube channel.

To learn about Hitomezashi stitch patterns, visit Numberphile on YouTube. Can you guess what words were used to generate the stitch pattern for this afghan? The answer is on the back (check out the last photo)!

If you haven’t tried my double overlay mosaic technique, you can learn how by downloading my Double Hearts Coaster Set pattern and following along on my YouTube Channel! Be sure to check it out! It’s lots of fun!

BONUS: If you prefer an overlay mosaic version to the double mosaic technique, a pre-ticked overlay mosaic chart for the afghan front is also included with this pattern!
