(I recommend using a yarn that is soft and has a little bit of fuzziness to it to help prevent unraveling with all the little knotted ends.)

You may use yarn type and hook size of choice with this pattern with excellent results. Sample doll-size blanket used a fingering weight acrylic yarn and crochet hook size f (3.75 mm). Sample photo also shows the same pattern worked in a variegated pink dk weight yarn and size H (5.0 mm) hook.
