My mom knitted a version of these mittens in the 1940s while riding the Minneapolis streetcar back and forth to work.

After seeing the original mitten pattern, which had double gussets at the thumb join, I decided to simplify it for the intermediate knitter. So here is the 21st century version of Dorothy Marie’s mittens along with a matching scarf.

Mittens are knitted on U.S. 1 and 2 needles, either dpns or two circulars (pattern instructions for both methods); scarf is knitted on a U.S. 4 needle;

Pattern is written row-by-row, and instructions are given for knitting with or without beads. If you’ve knitted in the round, perhaps made socks, you can make these mittens.
