Dottie Jane :: an asymmetrical triangle shawl knit on the bias with delicate, textural stripes of eyelet ridges, two-color brioche, and traditional lace. The colors and stitch patterns used were inspired by both my grandmother, Dottie, and Heather from Sew Happy Jane’s grandmother, Hattie Jane.

I designed this shawl especially for a lovely shop in Washington, Purl2. Using Sew Happy Jane’s beautiful yarns, I wanted to create a shawl full of delicate texture and fun stripes!

Grab 2 skeins of fingering weight yarn in complimenting colors, one speckled or variegated, and one solid or semi-solid. This will achieve the best combination for the shawl, but feel free to use all speckled yarns or all solid yarns for an explosion of color and fun! This is technically a “light fingering” weight yarn, but fingering weight yarn may also be substituted. Please note that the size and gauge of your shawl may vary. See last photo here for photos of the yarn used!

Skill level: Beginner brioche - Intermediate. Basic brioche skills are not required, but are recommended. Techniques used: knit, purl, knitting increases and decreases, brioche knit (brk), brioche purl (brp), brioche increases and decreases, traditional lace, picot and bobble bind off, asymmetrical triangle bias shawl shaping. I wrote this pattern to be very approachable to brioche beginners who want to dive deeper into brioche lace!! The brioche stripes are straightforward and broken up by eyelet and traditional lace stripes.

I have also provided a video tutorial link for the Picot and Bobble Bind Off that I used for this shawl! Check it out here: bit.ly/PicotBobbleBO

Construction Notes: This asymmetrical triangle shawl is knit sideways on the bias from cast on point to bind off edge. You will be knitting several stripes all using different textures and patterns. Beginning with an Eyelet Ridge stripe, you will move on to Two-color Brioche, both even and an interesting ivy lace pattern. The center stripe of the shawl is one of my more favorite lace patterns I’ve knit, which creates textural stripes within the pattern. You will repeat these stripes again before coming to the border, which is an exciting Japanese stitch pattern, creating beautiful leafy scallops! To add even more texture, the shawl is bound off using a combination Picot and Bobble technique.

This pattern has both written instructions and charts, which are used simultaneously.
