These eggs are great for Cosplay, Easter eggs or unique home decor! These make a lovely display with an assortment of colors displayed in a basket. This design is inspired by decades of Fantasy and Science Fiction dragons. It was very difficult to work out the mathematics of the pattern for the eggs are they are symmetrical from side to side but not from top to bottom. The scales are leaf shaped chain maille aluminum scales (which are available for purchase from us in 10 colors). The pattern includes instructions for 3 sizes of eggs. The small (4 inch egg) requires 122 scales, medium (6 inch egg) requires 236 scales and large (8 inch egg) requires 348 scales.

The egg form was purchased at a hobby store. Eggs are available in paper, foam and plastic. I like the paper ones as I can paint them with a thin coat of watered down acrylic paint to best match the yarn and scale colors. The egg form will show through in spots so you want a similar color match. Be sure to match your egg to the finished dimensions below. The scaled egg is knit flat and sewn around the form when complete. Gauge is CRITICAL to this project, or it won’t fit. Directions include a matching display ring to hold the egg for the medium and large sizes. I use a store bought metal craft ring for the small eggs.
Small: 25 yard, Medium 75, large 150 yards of any worsted weight.
Gauge: 3.5 per inch in garter, 4 rows per inch
