This hat is worked in the round, from the bottom up, with a wide band of slip-stitch ribbing, and a slip-stich pattern on the body of the hat that looks a (teeny) bit like delightful multi-coloured dragon scales when knitted up in a variegated yarn. The ribbing and the body of the hat are separated by a horizontal braid.

You could easily adapt the hat to make the ribbing narrower, just knit fewer rounds of slip-stitch rib before you switch to working the horizontal braid and the body of the hat.
