I woke one morning to realize I’d been dreaming about the creation of this hat. When I thought about the dream, I realized I already knew what size needles to use, how many to cast on and the openwork design. This hat wanted to be knitted! I haven’t been able to find one like it in a store or on the internet so I’m not sure if it qualifies as a tam, a slouch, a beanie, a snood or a Rastafarian for those with dreadlocks. Perhaps it is unique and a cousin to all those. I’ve received many compliments and requests for the pattern, so here it is!

The hat can be constructed with a 16” circular along with double pointed needles OR with Magic Loop.

The headband is about 23” and feels great over or behind the ears. For a looser fit, use next size larger needles; for tighter fit, use smaller.
Gauge isn’t critical unless you knit very tightly.

To make a longer hat to accommodate dreadlocks, add 20 yards per inch to be added.
To knit in Rastafarian stripes (black, yellow, green and red), begin new color at end of increase round.

Skills needed include: knitting in the round, yarn over, k2tog, SSK, KFB.

I strongly recommend using ring markers - you’ll need 10 of a light color and one darker.
