When I set out to develop a sweater with a medallion for this book, I first looked to Norah Gaughan’s Sunburst Pullover design, which I greatly admire. In it, the front and the back begin as circular medallions knit out from the center; a traditional raglan shape is then constructed around them. I planned to do likewise and started to make the calculations, then I spoke to Norah, who said she wished she had done the reverse: left space for the medallion, then filled it in. In my version, this approach was not only easier, as Norah had foreseen, but it allowed me to assemble the entire sweater and try it on before deciding how to fill in the circle.

This cardigan is worked in one piece from ribbed waistband to armholes, but is divided at back to shape the medallion circle that will later be filled in by picking up around the edge with a circular needle and working into the center.
