This hat is knit in the round using doubled strands of yarn: one strand of Garnstudio Drops Kid-Silk, and one strand of soft, 100% merino-based fingering yarn such as WOOLFOLk TYND. The merino yarn is the base yarn for the hat, whereas the kid-silk provides the hazy, cosy warmth. Two colours of Kid-Silk are used, with strands gradually added and removed to produce a subtle, hazy, colour fade between the brim and crown of the hat.

The hat is knit from the bottom up, using a tubular cast-on. The brim is knitted in twisted rib, with the body of the hat knit in stockinette. This hat is reversible and may be worn watchman-cap style with the brim turned up, or as a long, slouchy hat.

Size: fits 21” - 23”

Materials:

  • 3.5 mm and 4.5 mm circular needles, 16” to 20” long, or longer if you plan to use the magic loop technique, and/or DPNs. DPNs may be useful for knitting the crown of the hat
.

  • Darning needle to weave in any loose ends.

  • Waste fingering yarn for Tubular cast-on.

  • Stitch markers to mark the End of Round and crown decreases (optional).

  • 2 skeins of Garnstudio DROPS Kid-silk (75% Mohair, 25% silk), 25 g = 200 m. Choose one colour that is similar to the merino yarn colour, and a contrast colour that will fade or “drift” nicely with the first.

  • 1 skein of Woolfolk Tynd: 50 g = 223 y (204 m) 100% merino fingering yarn

These yarns and colours were used:

  • Colour A: DROPs Kid-silk colour “beige” unicolour 12

  • Colour B: DROPS Kid-silk colour “off-white” unicolour 01

  • WOOLFOLK TYND: Colour “00” or natural off-white.
