If you want to knit something truly original Dutch and learn stitches as you go:
This Dutch knit sampler from the collection of Stedelijk Museum Zwolle (1880-1920) is a nice project.
For personal use only.

Dutch girls from the age of 8, maybe 9 had to make these knit samplers at school up until the 1930’s. Cotton was very expensive so in may cases the material was re-used in stockings or underwear. Some samplers survived and ended up in museums or private collections.
This sampler is not really difficult, more an average one. The work was rolled up while knitting the sections. That’s why the Dutch name is ‘knit-roll’.
The sampler was an exercise in stitches used for stocking edges, caps or underwear. The sampler has a wobbly look, but this also shows the way the stitches ‘behave’. I prefer to use cotton and knit very tightly to make the patterns stand out. This is the way they were meant to be. But feel to free to use any kind of yarn or to increase or decrease at the sides to compensate for the way some stitch patterns make your work smaller or wider. Or you may want to add garter stitch edges.

The pattern is in PDF and can be downloaded for free and printed in landscape position.

The charts are easy to read because they each have their own instructions. They can also be knitted in the round: Read all rows from right to left for every row if you want to knit a stocking edge or a cap.

In the coming months I will add another sampler from the same museum collection. This one is more difficult and a lot longer in length. You could add these patterns to this first one and make a very long sampler. Enjoy!
