Known for their lust for gold, stubbornness, and talent for digging for metals and stones in the mines, Dwarves are stocky creatures with a penchant for long beards. With exceedingly long lifespans, they choose to spend their time mining and building their great underground halls and cities. While primarily artisans, Dwarves are also excellent warriors. Dressed in leather and precious metals, much of their battle wear and weaponry is adorned with geometric symbols. This knitted Dwarf helmet, inspired by the armor Gimli wears into battle, features an earthy darker-toned palette, reflecting the Dwarves’ preference to live most of their lives beneath the mountains in the dark.

With your very own Dwarf helmet, you, too, can feel battle (and cold weather) ready! Knit in garter slip-stitch colorwork, or mosaic knitting, there’s no color stranding along the wrong side. Beginning with two cheek guard pieces worked flat, the pieces are joined to form the bottom back neck. Additional stitches are then cast on with the remainder of the hat worked in the round. Geometric motifs mimic the beautiful metalwork Dwarves are known for, set on a background of hand-dyed brown to give the appearance of leather.
