Dyyni is the Finnish word for dunes. I was inspired by the sand dunes near my childhood home on the West coast of Finland. Every summer we would ride our bikes to the beach, swim and then lay down on towels in the shelter of the dunes. I remember twisting my wet hair to make droplets of sea water fall on the sand and watch how it trickled down the hot sand before disappearing. I wanted to capture the memory of the sweltering air, hot sand and coolness of the sea breeze into this design.

This pattern was designed especially for Nomad Noos Dry Deser Camel yarn. Nomad Noos yarns originate from Mongolia and aim to support the nomadic herders by sourcing only fibers which are not affecting their rangelands and helping in that way to increase their livelihood. The yarns are hand-spun by Nepalese women. Nomad Noos brings a consistent income for their team in Kathmandu on a daily base and creates a better life for our women and their families.

CONSTRUCTION

The Dyyni shawl is knitted flat in garter stitch with columns of slipped stitches that give it a ridged, ribbed appearance. The irregular bobble pattern keeps changing sides, so you don’t have to worry about the “wrong side” showing when wearing it. The irregularity of the bobbles makes this a very forgiving pattern, as small mistakes will not show: it doesn’t matter if you forget a bobble or two, or make an extra one here and there, little “mistakes” just add to the unevenness of the stitch pattern. You can also easily make the shawl longer or shorter to suit your own preferences and the amount of yarn you have available.
