Notes from the designer, Rebecca Aldrich Bowen:
My husband wears the earliest version of this hat under his hardhat during cold weather. It uses short rows to shape the ear flaps, so the entire hat is worked in one piece. This pattern is not written as a short-row tutorial. If you do not know how to work short rows, take a lesson before you attempt to work this pattern.

Hat is worked in the round in K2 P2 ribbing. Charts for short row sections included.
