While all the patterns I make are special to me in some way, these hats are especially so.

In November of 2012, my sister-in-law developed preeclampsia and gave birth to her daughter twelve weeks early. The 1 lb 10 oz miracle did incredibly well with no serious complications and only a two month stay in the NICU! Many people, including me, sent hats as gifts. The problem was that none of us really knew what a baby that small looked like. She received many hats that were so small they could only decorate the Charlie Brown Christmas tree in her room.

In June of 2013, I found myself in the hospital, also with preeclampsia, but this time I knew what to look for and we caught it early. My little girl was only born six weeks premature, and at 4lbs 2oz, only had to stay in the NICU for 2 1/2 weeks.

Today both girls are healthy, and we know we are incredibly blessed.

Having a preemie in the NICU means there is a lot of sitting and waiting while they sleep, listening to beeping monitors and the whirrs of medical machinery. After going through this with my own daughter, I designed this hat pattern to be a quick and easy project to help pass the time, or an easy gift to make and send! It also helped me feel like there was something I could do for her in a situation where it is easy to feel helpless and out of control.

Each NICU has their own guidelines for what clothing and materials are allowed. Each patient has their own special needs. Please check with the NICU staff for any restrictions before making your hats!

Sorry, no refunds or returns once the pattern has been made available for you to download.
