For a frigid planet basically devoid of intelligent life and has temperatures of -60 C (-76 F), lots of Star Wars fans can’t get enough of the planet Hoth. The Empire Strikes Back came out in May 1980, and 2020 marked the 40th anniversary of the release of the movie. The textured stitches and lace in the shawl represent features found on Hoth: the treacherous cracks, caves and trenches in the landscape, deep snow drifts, the ridged walls carved out at the base while the overall shape is a nod to a Tauntaun’s horns and sloping tail. I chose icy yarn colorways and drew inspiration from the movie, the Star Wars: Forces of Destiny comics and the Rebel Alliance.

Materials Needed:

-Fingering weight or sock weight yarn, total yardage 463 yds/424 m. Sample shown in Schachenmayr Regia 4-Ply. Other great brands include Madelinetosh, KnitPicks, Knitted Wit Sock. I recommend using a yarn with some natural fiber in it so the textured stitches will block nicely.
-US 6/4.0 mm 24”/60 cm circular needle, or size needed to obtain gauge
-Darning needle
-Spare yarn for lifelines (optional)
-Locking stitch markers (optional)

Gauge & Finished Measurements:

-21 sts and 20 rows = 4”/10 cm in garter stitch, blocked. Please note variations in gauge, needle type, yarn choice and blocking will affect yardage used and the finished size of the shawl.
-Wingspan: 60”/152.4 cm
-Bottom edge: 26”/66.04 cm

Skill Level & Skills Required:
-Perfect for advanced beginners looking to practice their lacework stitches or seasoned knitters who want a quick project to work on while watching TV or reading.
-Uses basic knitting stitches (cast on, bind off, knit, purl) and common lace stitches 2tog, ssk, yo)
