Elegant Ellen is a top down hat that is worked first in the round, for the crown, and then flat, for the side portion. The side pannel is attached as it is worked, leaving only a small number of stitches to bind off and seam when the hat is complete. The spray pattern is made up of twisted stitches and knots. The knots could be replaced with beads, if desired.

Row gauge is important for this pattern, to ensure a good fit around the ears, but can be modified for a larger or smaller hat. The hat shown fits my 6 year old with no modifications, and would likely fit most kids with very few modifications.

This hat takes about half a skein of Charlotte Bronte Worsted (shown) and a coordinating mitten pattern is coming to use up the rest of the skein.

Please note that the spray pattern is assymetrical, and extends further down the the reverse stockinette pannel on one side than on the other.
