I lost my heart to an Elf… it’s true (although I feel I must point out that the Elf in question was one of the tall, long haired, bow toting woodland variety. Not one of those annoying little bastards that inhabit shelves at Christmas!)

This cozy knitted Elf Hood is just what is needed when hiking through the winter-silent Forest in search of the magikal or for bringing a touch of the magikal into more urban settings where the Elves are even more elusive, but nevertheless, there. If you know where to look…

Gorgeous super chunky yarn by Countess Ablaze knits up in no time at all and produces a fabric that is warm, surprisingly light and superbly snow-proof (as extensive experiments last winter proved).

There’s no need to feel that icy wind in the gap between your scarf and your hat ever again!

Skill Level

Advanced Beginner - basic skills but ready to tackle something with shaping/cables, switching from knitting in the round to knitting flat in one piece and grafting/3-needle bind off

skills needed

  • cast on
  • knitting in the round
  • k2tog/ssk decreases
  • m1l, m1r increases
  • cables
  • kitchener stitch OR 3 needle bind off

Yarn substitution

The Elf Hood is designed to use one whole skein of Countess Ablaze Astronaut, Cosmonaut or Space Cadet - a super chunky 100% superwash merino that weighs in at 130m/142yd per 200g. If substituting yarns then look for something with similar yardage or else try a chunky single yarn held double and check your gauge before casting on
