I was going through old photos one day and I came across a polaroid of my tía Lala. She’s around my age in the photo and she’s relaxing on her bed in a strapless white mini dress with a strawberry print. Her feet aren’t visible in the photo, but I pictured a pair of playful ruffle socks on them. I loved the idea of some knit ruffle socks so much that I got straight to designing them during an August beach weekend in 2019. By the end of the weekend, I was done knitting them. I sent a message and some photos to my tía to show her the socks she inspired me to create. Her response was, “me haces unos en negro para ponemerlos con botines?”Translation - Can you make me some in black that I can wear with booties. I hope I get to see her soon and wear our Elvirita socks con botines together.

The Elvirita socks are effortless socks that you can knit in an assortment of colors to wear with all your favorite shoes. The ruffle is added at the end, so you can change the color of the ruffle, use a different fiber like mohair, and add as many ruffles as you like.

Size
1 (2, 3, 4)
Sock circumference 7 (8, 9, 10)“ / 18 (20, 23, 25) cm unstretched

Model is wearing size 1 with 1” / 2.5 cm of negative ease around foot

Tools
Tapestry needle
Stitch marker
Small crochet hook same size as needle or smaller - this is not needed but very helpful when picking up stitches

Notes
These socks are knit from the toe to the cuff using the magic loop method. The Fleegle Heel is used to create the gusset and heel. After the socks are bound off, you will then pick up stitches to complete the ruffle.
The instructions are written assuming stitches are divided onto two needles (magic loop). If using DPNs, you may wish to use stitch markers to separate “needle 1” and “needle 2”.
Measure the total length of your foot (toe to heel). You will need this measurement when knitting the foot of the sock.
If this is your first time knitting the Fleegle Heel, it will seem like your sock is going to be too long. Don’t worry though. As long as you got the correct gauge the sock will not be too long.
