The Lincoln Park Zoo in Chicago is a lovely place to pass a cloudy afternoon. Recently, I spent such an afternoon there, and found myself dawdling in the McCormick Bird House – home to dozens of species of birds.

One in particular caught my eye: the emerald starling. The feisty little fellow darted to and fro under the tree cover, and his brilliant green plumage captured my imagination.

My Emerald Starling is a simple rectangular lace shawl inspired by my afternoon at the zoo and the colors of the bird I met. The pattern includes both written and charted instructions.
