Carefully trained and pruned trees can be so impressive, an apple espalier was one of my first garden dreams. But my garden is wild, instead, I spend my time knitting. Here, a leaf stitch has been given a trellis to grow on. The stem twists gently and the edge displays a full foilage.

Espalier is a triangle shawl with a center lace panel instead of a single center stitch. The pattern is charted, adaptable in size, and it includes cables, therefore a cable needle is also required. Requires 500 to 600 meters of fingering weight yarn.

Green shawl used 1 skein Wollmeise Pure in Grashüpfer 100% wool, 575 yd/526 m per 150g on 3.5 mm (US 4) needles. Blocked size is 152 x 76 cm (60 x 30 inches). Gauge: 14 stitches = 10 cm in stockinette.

Purple shawl used 2 skeins Madelinetosh Tosh Merino Light in Heuchera 100% merino, 420 yd/384 m per 100g on 4 mm (US 6) needles. Blocked size is 122 x 60 cm ( 48 x 24 inches). Gauge: 18 stitches = 10 cm in stockinette.
