I have put out a series of Youtube videos on how to knit toe-up custom socks with any yarn you have. There are demonstrations of how to knit using one long circular needle (magic loop) and then other set of demos using DPNs.
The demonstrations are in Worsted weight yarn but can easily be used with any yarn weight you prefer.

You can find these videos on my youtube channel
CAST ON 12 sts for worsted weight yarn
24sts for fingering weight yarn
20sts for Sport weight yarn

For one long circular needle - Magic Loop
video is here

  • Judy’s magic cast on
  • Calculating for the socks
  • Increases - make one right and make one left
  • Placing waste yarn for after thought heel
  • Increasing at back of leg for calf muscle
  • Stretchy Bind Off
  • Picking up heel stitches and knitting the afterthought heel
  • Finishing and weaving in all ends
  • Steam blocking the finished socks

For DPNs
Part 1 - Judy’s magic Cast on and knit up to the heel with calculations - DPNs
Part 2 - Place waste yarn for heel and finish up to the cuffs, stretchy bind off
Part 3 - Picking up the heel and knitting with decreases to complete it, steam blocking, weaving in ends
