Every little girl needs a fairy - and this fairy is particularly magical because she disappears when you look straight at her.

When you look at illusion knitting from directly in front you only see narrow stripes. The image appears when you look from an angle. The fairy has been designed to be viewed from the side so you can use it as a baby blanket or a wall-hanging.

Illusion knitting is very easy to do because you are only using one colour for each ridge of knitting. There is no stranding or changing colour part way across. If you can knit and purl you can do this.

The blanket/wall-hanging in the photos was made using Stylecraft Special DK in Fiesta and Candyfloss. The colours are almost fluorescent. I used about 500 metres (550 yards) of each colour, with extra for the border. You don’t have to use colours as bright as these. Any two contrasting colours will work. The shading in the fairy’s wings is very subtle and, as with all my illusion designs, the photos do not do it justice.

The main part of the blanket is approximately 70 cm by 90 cm (28” by 36”). The border makes it a little bit bigger than this. You could make a much wider border all round to make it afghan size for an older child. It can be made in any type of yarn. Using a thicker, or thinner yarn would change the overall size.

The pattern has various versions of the chart, including one intended for tablet users, to make it as easy as possible for you to make this without ever losing your place.
