When I saw this stitch pattern in a stitch dictionary, I immediately thought of quilt squares. The coziness of a quilt brought to mind the beloved story The Little House in the Big Woods by Laura Ingalls Wilder. This created confusion for me in naming the pattern; I wanted both ideas in the name. So it’s pretty darn long. Maybe I should just abbreviate it: FWQS.

This piece is knitted flat from the bottom, up, ending in a hood. The cowl ends are bound off at a height of 12.5 inches, and the hood is then knitted straight up the center. To finish, the top is folded in half, and seamed either by sewing or by using the 3-needle bind-off method: knitter’s choice. The cowl buttons diagonally in the front using three large buttons on the public side, and two smaller buttons on the inside for stability.

The whole piece will fit on the outside of a slimmer fitting winter coat, including the hood, and it will also on the inside of a larger hooded coat, with the coat’s hood over the top of the cowl hood. You could always just wear it with a T-shirt to be cool, too.
