Always wanted to crochet your favourite Vulcan? Kinda wished he was a rabbit? Now, finally, you can! Mr Spock is the first instalment in Pony McTate’s “Famous Rabbits” series. Take your fan art to the next level with this comprehensive written pattern. Your Spock is a fun and absorbing make, with optional wiring. He makes an ideal gift for that hard-to-buy-for Trekkie/er in your life.

The pattern
This 11-page pattern is written in English in UK crochet terms and includes a conversion chart to US terms. It features detailed notes, plenty of colour photographs and charts for some of the tricky bits.

Level of difficulty
Suitable for intermediate-level crocheters who are confident reading crochet patterns. Some fiddliness.

Finished measurements
Using the specified hook and yarn, your Spock will measure about 30cm (12in) from feet to tips of ears.

Things you’ll need

  • A 2.5mm (B/1 or C/2) hook
  • Yarn: I used Scheepjes Catona yarn (4ply, 100% mercerised cotton) as follows:

One 50g (125m) ball of 110 (Jet Black).
One 25g (62m) ball each of 404 (English Tea) and 261 (Capri Blue).
Plus a small amount of 208 (Yellow Gold) and black embroidery floss.

You can substitute any weight yarn and the appropriate size hook. Be aware that your finished size and yardage may differ.

  • 9mm safety eyes
  • Notions: scissors, tapestry needle, stitch marker.
  • Polyester stuffing.
  • Thin plastic or card to stabilise the feet.
  • Wire (optional): I used 1.6mm (14 gauge) tie wire from a building supply shop but you could use heavy-duty florist wire.

Method of construction
Your Spock is crocheted in the amigurumi method, i.e. in a continuous spiral, rather than by joining each round. He is worked from the feet up, with arms and ears sewn on afterwards. Full instructions for adding wire (optional) are included.
