Gauge
19 sts and 31 rows = 4” (10 cm) in stockinette stitch on larger needle, after blocking

Notes
Sweater is worked sideways, with fabric moving on the bias within it. It starts with a lace border (this is the right front band of the sweater), and then continues with lace along the right edge (the top of the sweater) and rib along the left edge (the bottom of the sweater). Waste yarn is placed for the right armhole as for an afterthought pocket or heel, and the left armhole is worked by splitting the fabric into two pieces and working them concurrently (as you might for two shoulders of a sweater). The sweater is finished with ribbing (this is part of the hem of the sweater). For the vest version, stitches are picked up along the armholes and worked in the round for a short armband; for the sweater version, stitches are picked up along the armholes and a short row sleeve cap is worked to shape them. From there, the sleeves are worked in the round in stockinette to a lace and ribbed cuff.
