Feileacain is a matching mittens and hat set, featuring a complex, intriguing twist stitch Celtic cable pattern. The cable is a translation into knitting of a motif found in The Book Of Kells, an exquisite illuminated manuscript gospel created in Ireland in 800AD.

Finished Measurements:

  • Hat: Brim circumference: 17” / 43 cm, Height: 9” / 23 cm Intended to be worn with 0–3” / 0–7.5 cm negative ease.
  • Mittens: Hand circumference: 7” / 18 cm, Length: 9 ½“ / 24 cm Intended to be worn with 0–1” / 0–2.5 cm negative ease.

Materials:

  • 3 skeins Simply Socks Simply Sock Yarn (175 yd / 160 m per 1 ¾ oz / 50 g skein; 80% Wool, 20% Nylon) in Caribbean. Two skeins will make either the hat or mittens.
  • Stitch markers, cable needle, stitch holder or waste yarn, tapestry needle

Needles:

  • Mittens: Size 1 US / 2.25 mm needle(s) in preferred style for small circumference knitting in the rnd
  • Hat: Size 1 US / 2.25 mm needle(s) 16” / 40 cm circular needle, Size 2 US / 2.75 mm 16” / 40 cm circular needle and needle(s) in preferred style for small circumference knitting in the rnd. Adjust needle size if necessary to obtain correct gauge.

Gauge:

  • Mittens: 29 sts and 29 rows over cable pattern from Hat Chart (sts 4–32, after increases are worked) measure approx 2 ½“ / 6.5 cm wide.
  • Hat: 29 sts and 29 rows over cable pattern from Hat Chart (sts 4–32, after increases are worked) measure approx 3 1/8” / 8 cm wide, using larger needle(s)
