This prize-winning design will catch everyone’s eye! A fun felting project with beautiful results, this is for intermediate knitters who enjoy producing something both interesting and practical and seeing their work draw attention and compliments.

Finished size: After felting, about 29” around by 10½” tall when the bag is sitting on its bottom. Your results may vary quite a bit depending on the yarn chosen and how far down you shrink it. Lamb’s Pride is thicker than the other yarns mentioned above and will come out bigger around but somewhat shorter.

Yarn: Feltable worsted-weight yarn such as Cascade 220 (not superwash), Brown Sheep Nature Spun, or Brown Sheep Lamb’s Pride. If using solid colors, you will need as many colors as you choose, from 2-12. Depending on the length of handle B, 650-850 yards altogether should be ample. The I-cord trim and handles take 125-150 yards of that total. Each tier takes about 45-55 yards. If adding a lash yarn to the base triangles (which become the top of the bag), it takes about 35 yards.

When changing colors from one tier of blocks to the next, don’t put light against light or dark against dark, as the differences will not show up well after felting.

Needles: Because of the loose gauge on felted projects, bamboo or other wooden/non-slick needles work better than slick metal ones, as the slick ones are harder to hang onto.

2 US size 11 (8 mm) 16” circulars (if you prefer DPNs, you will need a set of size 11s for the center bottom and the handles)
1 US size 11 (8 mm) 24” circular
1 US size 13 (9 mm) 16” circular or DPNs
1 US size 6-8 (4-5 mm) 24” circular (used for picking up edge stitches)

Notions: Size G or H crochet hook; tapestry needle; scissors; measuring tape; one large sliding stitch marker (must fit the size 11 needle); coilless pins or locking st markers; large zippered bag for felting; about 6 yards of waste yarn for the provisional cast-on; access to a top-loading washer.
