This mosaic pattern is for 4 wool coasters with 2 colors, knitted with only one color at a time and with only knit stitches. The entire pattern uses a repeat of ‘knit, knit, slip.’ Great for a beginner knitter. When the piece is complete, it is ‘felted’ or shrunk using hot water, soap and agitation to give it a dense and fuzzy look. After felting you will cut your coaster into a decorative shape.

Pattern includes pictures throughout with detailed descriptions of each step.

Coasters shown were knitted with Paton’s Classic wool worsted, which felts much better than a number of other wools I tried. It is important to choose 100% wool that is NOT superwash or it will not felt. Pattern is written for red and green for Christmas holidays, but any color combination can be used as long as colors are clearly distinct from one another. Choosing colors that are similar will make this project unnecessarily difficult.

After teaching classes with this pattern I learned that although there are instructions in both written and in spreadsheet form, students make fewest mistakes by following written pattern for Rows 1 and 2 front and back, then skipping to page 6 on “How to Proceed without using Pattern”.
