Here is a great way to use up small amounts of left over sock yarn. Make lots of modular diamonds and mix colors and patterns with abandon. You will knit one diamond at a time, but you will knit them together as you go, so there is no sewing at the end. Increase the variety of your yarns by trading with other knitters, buying single skeins on sale, etc. you can alter the size by adding or subtracting rows of diamonds. The shawl is a modified triangle.
