He’s like fire and ice and rage. He’s like the night and the storm in the heart of the sun. He’s ancient and forever. He burns at the center of time and can see the turn of the universe…and he’s wonderful.” – Doctor Who, season 3, episode 9, “The Family of Blood,” aired 2 June 2007

Yes, a Doctor Who reference…for I am a Whovian.

All-over patterned socks (stitch pattern, slightly adjusted, from Barbara Walker) knit on two long circulars, using uncommon stitch counts based in groups of seven (7), a modified Eye of Partridge heel flap (found in Hermione’s Everyday Socks), rounder heel (found here), a double gusset heel decrease (found here), and a wedge toe that is Kitchener stitched at the end. Substitutions can be made, if you feel adventurous (heel turns, common placement of gusset decreases, stitch patterns for the heel flap, etc.), but understand that it may change some numbers.

The original was knit in size Medium.

Other things you might want:

  1. Two locking stitch markers (this is HIGHLY RECOMMENDED for the gusset decreases)
  2. More locking stitch markers (to mark pattern repeats - 6/XS, 7/S, 8/M, 9/L)
  3. Crochet hook to pick up pesky dropped stitches (which you would never, ever do)
  4. Tapestry needle for weaving in ends

Other random bits of information:

  1. In the pattern, you will see an abbreviation SKP, which is a left-slanting decrease. It is basically a S1, K1, PSSO but you do the S1 knitwise. You can substitute SSK or any other left-slanting decrease you wish
  2. A note about variegated/self-striping yarn: I have no idea how this is going to work. Feel free to try it. I suspect the pattern will get lost, however.
