Elizabeth Zimmerman says that mittens are the perfect summer knitting. Not too much wool on your lap, but plenty of time to knit several to store up in time of need.

The firebrick mittens will keep your hands warm while you play outside just like the fire inside will warm you once you discard your woolen wear.
