This is a so called “garden” type of hat, with a flat top, and a wide, flat brim.

The size of the hat is for head circumference 55-56 cm/21.6–22 in. However, the size is easily adjustable to your head measurements by selecting a thinner/thicker yarn and a smaller/larger hook.

On the internet I found motifs that I liked for this hat, but I made significant changes to its original pattern to get the size that I needed. In these instructions you will find my interpretation of the diagram for the motifs as well as written directions for each round. This pattern has photos of each stage of the making process with detailed written instructions.

This pattern is designed for intermediate level crocheters - those who are familiar with round crochet. The skills needed are:
• chain
• slip stitch
• single crochet
• half double crochet
• double crochet
• back loop crochet
• joining new colour
• joining pieces together with a slip stitch.

The cotton yarn I used to make the first Fiscardo Patchwork Hat was a gift without a label, but basically, choosing any 100% cotton yarn for hook 3.5–4 mm (US 6–8) will be excellent for this piece. Blend yarn with high percentage of cotton is suitable material as well. For the second Fiscardo I used 100% cotton yarn for hook 2.5–3.5 mm (US 1.5–4).

I used about 220 gr of yarn = 4.4 balls (1 ball is 50 gr = 125 m/137 yrd)

The hat is made from 10 square motifs, 4 of which make up the crown of the hat, and 6 make up the brim. After the 4 crown motifs are assembled together, the top is worked in the rounds from the outside edge towards the center. Another option is to separately crochet the top, starting from the center, and join it to the crown.

The brim is made up from 6 square motifs, and the spaces between them are filled in by crocheting extra rows in the angles between them, as you will see in the instructions below.
The brim is finished with 1 round of single crochet and 1 round of sc worked over a piece of wire to firm the edge.

After completing it, the hat is starched with a sugar and water mix by spraying it all over, and left to dry.
