From Knitting Lingerie Style:

Fishnet stockings bring to mind images of cabaret girls, rock stars, pinups, and punks, all of whom have done their part to immortalize them.  Once thought scandalous, in today’s fashion climate they are a staple.  My fishnets are worked in a worsted-weight yarn and a traditional diamond-shaped mesh pattern.  I’ve handled the shaping in the shaft of this stocking a bit differently from the others in this chapter.  By switching to a larger needle at the point of the calf rather than adding stitches, the circumference is enlarged without interfering with the mesh stitchwork.
