I designed this cowl as a textile project for the Top Floor Art Gallery in Saintfield, Northern Ireland. I wanted something cozy to wear in winter, small enough to fit in my bag, and that looked interesting texturally and showed off some beautiful stitch patterns. There are five sections to this cowl, each with its own features.

This project is knit like a small stitch sampler, with each section bordered by a short section break. Lengthen or shorten the sections at your whim! Gauge can be adjusted as desired.

This cowl, as written, fits the average adult with some positive ease. Go down a half needle size (4.5mm) if substituting with DK yarn. (You may want to add additional repeats; if so, make sure you have extra yarn.) A child’s version can be made by using sport weight yarn and size 4mm needles.

UPDATE A tutorial for knitting the C3 stitch is now available on my blog, A Million Paper Stars:
