Fleisher's Sandringham
This stitch pattern is from 1912 Fleisher’s Knitting and Crocheting Manual, p.157 and was part of a handsome sweater with notched lapels. There’s a multiple of 8 stitches with 4 pattern rows. Two of the rows are “purl across”. For my swatch, I used a yarn color to mimic the brick exterior of Sandringham House, a much-loved country estate of the British royal family in Norfolk.
Skills needed: cast on, knit, purl and bind off in knit stitch.
Gauge is not important in this pattern. Any block-able yarn/thread will work.
Make a swatch to check gauge and appearance. My first Sandringham swatch with Lion Brand Wool Ease Recycled yarn had great stitch definition but I didn’t like the (Terracotta) color. My second swatch of Valley Yarn’s Peru yarn had great color (05 Sunset) but the high alpaca content somewhat obscured the stitch pattern. In hindsight, I should have blocked the Peru swatch more aggressively to compensate. Making swatches is a good thing to do!
60 yards of Valley Yarns’ Peru will make 10 inches of a 32-stitch-wide strip at gauge.
