This simple, quick-moving mitten starts with a 1x1 rib and uses an easy-to-memorize thumb gusset with only k1fb increases-- it has a great rhythm, and results in a wonderfully customized fit. The finger cap is sewn onto the back of the hand with a substantial overlap in fabrics, keeping you snug and warm and invulnerable to winter gales.

I wrote this pattern up for a class that I taught at the Knitting Sisters in Williamsburg, VA. I taught the class twice, with great success! My students took this basic recipe and used it as a launching pad for their own mitten (and even glove) preferences.

Note on yarn: I loved the fabric that the Felted Tweed made when knit at just over 7 sts to the inch. Very warm, firm but soft, and the flecks of color just look beautiful. You may be able to squeeze a pair out of one ball, but to be on the safe side, get two.
